When is registration?
Registration begins in December and closes February 1st. Registration is used to determine the number of teams needed for each age cohort. Based on the total number of participants at each level, the number of teams are determined. To ensure players have appropriate playing time, please register your player on time.
Are there tryouts?
There are no formal tryouts for the regular season teams. Coaches will evaluate players ability and potential to ensure teams have even ability levels.
Is prior lacrosse experience required?
No! We accept new players each year from 1st-8th grade. No prior experience is required.
Who can coach?
For our first through fourth grade teams, parent coaches are our primary coaches. There is no requirement for parents to have played the game to coach.
For our fifth through eighth grade teams, young adults that live in our community and played at the collegiate level will be the primary coaches.
To register as a coach, select ‘register as coach/volunteer’ on the registration landing page.
Does my player need to attend every practice?
In short, no. We would love for your player to attend every practice, but we understand that they have school activities and other sports. As long as your player is able to make it to one practice a week, that works for us.
Is there a residency requirement?
Yes, to play for Charlestown lacrosse you must reside in Charlestown, Back Bay, North End, South End, Medford, Somerville, Allston/Brighton or another Boston neighborhood that does not have an existing program. If you are unsure about what lacrosse programs look like in your neighborhood please visit the MYL website here.
What is your refund policy?
We are able to refund families for players that are no longer participating in the program. If your player pulls out later in the season please reach out to our director, Kristina at charlestownlacrossedirector@gmail.com
Do you offer scholarships/financial aid?
Yes, you can fill out financial aid requests during the registration process. If you have questions or concerns or are looking for help with equipment, please contact our director Kristina at charlestownlacrossedirector@gmail.com
What are the uniforms?
Uniforms are ordered at the beginning of the year and the ordering link will be available during registration. The official uniform includes shorts and a jersey. The jersey design remains the same to allow for sizes to be passed down or grown into.
What is select lacrosse?
Select lacrosse is available to our fifth through eighth graders. During practice and select tryouts, coaches are evaluating the player’s skill set. The players with the strongest abilities are invited to join the select teams and compete against other town’s top players. Select games are on Friday nights. This team includes an additional cost and potentially additional practices. Select teams have tournament play at the end of their season that goes into June.
What equipment is needed?
All players are required to wear protective gear.
For Boys: Lacrosse stick, gloves, helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, mouthguard
For Girls: Lacrosse stick, goggles, mouthguard. No jewelry is permitted to be worn during games which includes earrings. Refs will not allow players to tape over their earrings, so we recommend waiting until after the season for new piercings.
How does team placement work?
During the first two weeks of practice, coaches will be evaluating player’s ability and potential. Most grade groups will have two or three teams. The goal is for each team to have an even ability distribution. You will be notified of your player’s team placement at least a week before the first game and will then have access to the full season schedule. We create the teams with a mix of schools and neighborhoods.
What happens if there is bad weather?
Practices are weather dependent. If there is torrential rain/snow/wind or general bad weather, practice will likely be canceled.
Games will only be canceled in the case of a severe weather event. If there is only rain (no thunder and lighting), and the game is being played on turf, the game will likely be played since it is difficult to reschedule games since that would typically mean a double header.
Coaches will be in touch if games and practices are canceled. If you do not hear anything that means practice/game is on!
